Luchino Visconti directs this art-house classic, set in 19th Century Italy. Venetian Countess Lidia (Alida Valli) risks her marriage and social position for the love of the young Austrian officer Franz Mahler (Farley Granger). As the affair develops, however, it becomes clear that Franz may not have been worth the sacrifice.
